The Herbert Protocol is a simple but important scheme that helps support people living with dementia, as well as the families, friends and carers who look after them. It is designed to provide reassurance and peace of mind should a loved one ever go missing.

The scheme allows families or carers to complete a form in advance with useful information such as important contact details, medication, favourite places, daily routines, and a recent photograph. This information can then be quickly shared with Police Scotland if needed, helping emergency services respond faster and reducing valuable time spent gathering details during what can already be a very stressful situation.

Since being introduced in 2017, the Herbert Protocol has helped safely reunite many vulnerable people with their loved ones in Scotland. It has become an important way for families, carers, emergency services and local communities to work together to help keep people safe.

For many families, having the form prepared offers comfort in knowing that, if the worst happens, vital information is already available to help bring someone home quickly and safely. The form can be updated at any time and kept somewhere easy to access, such as on a computer or within a care plan.

The Herbert Protocol is not only about responding when someone goes missing, it is about helping families feel supported, prepared and less alone while caring for someone living with dementia.

If this would be beneficial to you or your family, please watch the video from Police Scotland and follow the links below.
